YOUTH PROGRAM & RECREATION LEADER
Position Type: Summer Student (May–August)
Department: Recreation & Community Services
Reports To: Recreation Manager / Recreation Coordinator
Hours of Work: 35–40 hours per week (may include occasional
evenings/weekends)
Wage Range: Minimum wage to $18.50/hour, depending on experience
and education
Work Term: Early May – Late August
Position Overview
The Youth Program & Recreation Leader delivers engaging, active, and inclusive programs for children ages 5–12. This includes daily programming, special events, and recreational opportunities that encourage learning, creativity, and physical activity. The Leader will collaborate with the Senior Wellness Leader and the Community Events Leader to support department-wide initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead youth programs including day camps, arts & crafts, outdoor play, and physical activity sessions.
- Create safe, inclusive environments for children of varying abilities and interests.
- Supervise participants and maintain positive behaviour management practices.
- Communicate with parents/guardians and prepare weekly program schedules.
- Assist with advertising, program materials, and community outreach.
- Support community events, intergenerational activities, and recreation initiatives across all ages.
Qualifications
- Current university or college student in Recreation, Child & Youth Studies, Education, Kinesiology, ECE, or related program.
- Experience working with children (camps, coaching, tutoring, childcare, etc.) required.
- Strong leadership, communication, and planning skills.
- Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and adapt programming.
- First Aid/CPR required before start; High Five certification is considered an asset.
