SENIOR WELLNESS & RECREATION PROGRAM LEADER

Position Type: Summer Student (May–August)
Department: Recreation & Community Services
Reports To: Recreation Manager / Recreation Coordinator
Hours of Work: 35–40 hours per week (may include occasional evenings/weekends)
Wage Range: Minimum wage to $18.50/hour, depending on experience and education
Work Term: Early May – Late August

Position Overview

The Senior Wellness & Recreation Program Leader will plan, coordinate, and deliver accessible and engaging recreational opportunities for older adults and the legacy population. The role focuses on enhancing wellness, social connectedness, and quality of life through inclusive program design. The Leader will work collaboratively with the Youth Program Leader and the Community Recreation & Events Leader to ensure coordinated programming across all age groups.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, lead, and evaluate senior-focused recreation programs and wellness activities.
Facilitate monthly socials, drop-in programs, intergenerational activities, and outdoor recreation opportunities.
Build positive relationships with senior participants, caregivers, and community partners.
Assist with communications and promotion (social media, posters, schedules).
Track participation, support program evaluation, and complete required reporting.
Ensure safe, inclusive program delivery following municipal policies and accessibility guidelines.
Support community events and cross-program activities as needed.

Qualifications

Current university or college student in Recreation, Kinesiology, Gerontology, Social Sciences, Education, or related field.
Experience working with seniors or leading community programs is an asset.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
First Aid/CPR an asset; willingness to obtain prior to start.

Hiring Details

Applicants must be returning to full-time studies in the fall or meet student employment eligibility requirements. Employment is subject to a satisfactory background check.

YOUTH PROGRAM & RECREATION LEADER

Position Overview

The Youth Program & Recreation Leader delivers engaging, active, and inclusive programs for children ages 5–12. This includes daily programming, special events, and recreational opportunities that encourage learning, creativity, and physical activity. The Leader will collaborate with the Senior Wellness Leader and the Community Events Leader to support department-wide initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Plan and lead youth programs including day camps, arts & crafts, outdoor play, and physical activity sessions.
Create safe, inclusive environments for children of varying abilities and interests.
Supervise participants and maintain positive behaviour management practices.
Communicate with parents/guardians and prepare weekly program schedules.
Assist with advertising, program materials, and community outreach.
Support community events, intergenerational activities, and recreation initiatives across all ages.

Qualifications

Current university or college student in Recreation, Child & Youth Studies, Education, Kinesiology, ECE, or related program.
Experience working with children (camps, coaching, tutoring, childcare, etc.) required.
Strong leadership, communication, and planning skills.
Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and adapt programming.
First Aid/CPR required before start; High Five certification is considered an asset.

COMMUNITY RECREATION & EVENTS LEADER

The Community Recreation & Events Leader supports the planning, coordination, and delivery of community-wide events and drop-in recreation opportunities. The role includes event logistics, set-up, promotion, and onsite facilitation. This Leader works collaboratively with both the Senior Wellness Leader and Youth Program Leader in creating community experiences that serve all ages.

Key Responsibilities

Assist with planning, organizing, and delivering community events and recreation initiatives.
Coordinate event details, volunteer support, equipment, set-up, and take-down.
Develop promotional materials and support communication through social media and print channels.
Engage with residents and participants to encourage participation and build community connections.
Assist with cross-age programming, drop-in sessions, and intergenerational activities.
Complete post-event reporting, attendance tracking, and evaluations.

Qualifications

Current university or college student in Recreation & Sport Management, Event Management, Tourism, Communications, Public Relations, or related field.
Experience coordinating events, volunteering, or working in recreation is an asset.
Strong organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail.
Ability to lift and move equipment for event set-ups.
First Aid/CPR or willingness to obtain.
