Notice to Residents- Program for Homeowners Affected by Drought
The New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (NBEMO) has established a Drought Monitoring Committee in response to low rainfall levels and the approaching freeze-up period. As part of this effort, NB Housing has released program details to assist eligible homeowners facing expenses related to dry or defective wells.
Residents are encouraged to review the information below and share it through local channels to help increase community awareness.
Emergency Repair Program (ERP)
The ERP is designed to support urgent situations where a homeowner’s water system has become defective and poses an immediate risk to the health and safety of occupants.
Eligibility Highlights:
- Applicants must own their home.
- Total household income must be below the Household Income Limits set by NB Housing.
- Assistance is provided as a non-repayable contribution.
- Maximum funding: $15,000 per household within a seven-year period (shared with the Homeowner Repair Program).
- Applicants who have previously accessed funds under the Homeowner Repair Program may receive a reduced amount.
- Case-by-case exceptions may be considered.
Important Note:
To qualify under the ERP for a new well, the homeowner must:
- Be completely out of water, or
- Have water that has been condemned.
If the situation is not an emergency—for example, replacing a low-producing but still potable well—the homeowner may still receive assistance, but would be referred to the Homeowner Repair Program instead.
